In its recently published report, ‘Battery Electric Commercial Vehicles in the Netherlands: Is it time for electrons?’, Rabobank concludes that battery electric trucks (HCVs) are not currently a viable solution for heavy transport. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is still higher than that of trucks running on (Bio-)LNG, even when subsidies and future toll measures are taken into account. For companies that want to drive sustainably and keep their operational costs under control, this is an important reality check.
Electrification is appealing for light transport, but Bio-LNG remains dominant in heavy transport.
According to Rabobank, electric delivery and medium-duty vehicles are already competitive in many cases, especially when they benefit from subsidy schemes. However, for heavy vehicles, the tipping point is still a long way off. Higher purchase costs, long charging times, limited range and the slow roll-out of charging infrastructure mean that electric driving will only become a serious alternative for this class after 2030. Those who want to become more sustainable today have better options.
LNG and Bio-LNG are already delivering benefits for your logistics operations
Rabobank’s analysis confirms what many companies are already experiencing in practice: trucks running on LNG, and especially Bio-LNG, are currently the most feasible and affordable route to more sustainable transport. The infrastructure is already in place, the technology has proven to be reliable, and the costs per kilometre are structurally lower. Companies that want to make their logistics operations more sustainable without compromising on reliability or efficiency are increasingly opting for Bio-LNG.
Why wait, when you can already have a cleaner and cheaper solution?
With Bio-LNG, fossil-free driving is not a vision of the future, but a proven reality. Rolande makes it possible:
